Great Lakes Decorative Artists began in 1973 and became an affiliated chapter in 1975 as the first Michigan chapter of the National Society of Tole & Decorative Painters. We were first known as Tole Masters of Michigan and changed our name in 1985.

Our 2012 Executive Board

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam, and for a brief moment its glory and beauty belong to our world. But then it flies on, and though we wish it could have stayed, we feel lucky to have seen it.

You are required to be a member of the Society of Decorative Painters before applying for membership in a local chapter.   

In March 1999 GLDA began a community service project by becoming a member of the Memory Box Artists Program. The program is an all-volunteer effort to provide boxes to hospitals for the families of infants who pass away in the hospital. Memory Boxes are given to parents to hold precious memento's,such as the name bracelet, hand and foot prints, photographs, etc. Every year in the US, approximately 40,000 infants are still born. This project is for the families left behind.

Our commitment to donate hand painted memory boxes is done on a monthly basis with deliveries to local hospitals or by mail to hospitals in other states. This is all made possible, not only by the members of GLDA, but with the help of our sister chapters, Valley Tole Decorative Painters, Brush Benders and Paint-N-Pals,
and the generous contributions from various teachers who have organized paint-in's and sent their painted boxes to GLDA to support this program. To all who participate - we thank you!

The Memory Box Artists Program was started June 6, 1998.
To  date over 100,000 boxes have been provided for infant bereavment programs

GLDA meetings are held the 3rd Saturday of Jan, Mar, May, Jul and Sep, and a select day in Nov for our annual Christmas get-together. We invite you to be our speical guest if you are visiting the area. Membership is open to everyone! Our dues are $15.00 a year.  2012 meetings will be held at The Tabernacle Church, 14205 12 Mile Rd., Warren, MI  48088   (corner of St. Edumunds St. - bet. Schoenherr & Hayes Rd.)
